I have a tiny story to tell ~
We were having a wonderful Sunday evening....
Clara had spent the afternoon with us, we'd taken her to w-mart and had a big time!
We were planning on having an old fashioned vegetable meal for dinner.
My hubs makes an amazing squash casserole, plus we planned on
black-eyed peas, cabbage, new potatoes, biscuits and even cornbread.
Brent and Emily had gone fishing together and were coming to eat
and Chase was coming over as well...
we always seem to have a crowd around here!
We were in the home stretch with dinner....everything was almost finished.
I pulled out the squash casserole and placed on the stove top.
I had just removed the new potatoes from the burner, so it was still really hot.
I decided to move the casserole over and it EXPLODED in my face!!!!
Well, first I screamed...
Emily and Clara were both in the kitchen with me
and I just happened to be right in front of the dish.
I'm just so thankful they were on the other side of the room!!
I was cut in a couple of places and GLASS WAS EVERYWHERE!
Of course, next I started bawling my eyes out...our wonderful dinner was ruined.
Glass shards were all in my new potatoes....all over the cornbread....
and of course the amazing squash casserole was ruined.
Thank goodness the other items had lids ~
My sweet boys cleaned up everything as I cried on the front porch :)
What a baby I was. Brent and Chase cleaned it all up and headed to the
grocery store to save the day....what would I do without my sweeties???
But what I wanted to tell you was that this isn't the first time
this has happened to me with a Pyrex dish!
They just can't handle high heat!!
I googled it and found TONS of folks this has happened to.
From now on we'll cook in a metal pan ~
this was just way too scary.

Dawn,
That is horrible!! So glad you were not hurt more seriously, and that no one else was close!!
Good you shared so others will be able to avoid same scenario.
Re book: Does this one have a lot of cream Christmas decorating ideas? I am especially looking for that right now.
Would never have thought to order them sued. Great idea.
I'll wait to order till you can point me in direction of best one to get. (I'm just guessing you have done this before.) =)

Dawn,
How scary is that, thanks for the heads up! I do hope you're o.k.!
I love the older Victoria books too, they never let you down.....:).
Take care........
Oh my Dawn what a scary thing to happen, first thing I thought of was the glass then getting burned....I sure hope that you are okay. So happy no one else was involved. I had a pepsi bottle explode on me one time, I was getting it from under a counter and it exploded and cut my foot pretty bad. I didn't get stitches and it took a long time to heal. Also nice to know this about pyrex....take care Sweet Lady....
Dear Dawn,
I'm so glad you didn't get glass in your eyes!Don't feel bad about crying, I would have cried too! I am thankful no one else was hurt too!
This happened to me before too. I had a pyrex dish on a cookie sheet in the oven. I opened the door to check on it and it was cracked into pieces with all the food oozing out onto the cookie sheet!
I love everyone of Victoria's books. They are just full of beautiful images that you can just keep going back to, time and time again. Thank you for sharing this one.
Have a wonderful week.
Hugs and love,
Sonya
Dawn,
Thanks for info on books. I ordered both. =)
I see what you are talking about with change in blogger and pics. I do not like it either, that viewers cannot enlarge them to huge any more.
Will they ever just leave well enough alone???
hugs and blessings

Oh my goodness, dearest Dawn- I`m so thankful, you was not cut in your face, or badly hurt in any way- and that Clara was not by your side- how very scary, sweetheart-thanks for telling, I have been lucky ,I guess, not experiencing that.
And thanks for the book info, I love Victoria-mags and books, too.
Wish you a pieceful monday my precious friend.
Hugs and love,Dorthe
That sounds awful and so scary. I hope that you are okay and thank goodness little Clare was on the other side of the room. Your dinner sounded so good but I am so glad that there wasn't more damage to you.
Oh, my! I've never heard of a pyrex dish exploding! So happy you weren't badly hurt!

Dawn - so hppay you weren't hurt! I've had a pyrex dish explode also - thankfully it was still in the oven and all the mess stayed there. I've read several articles about exploding pyrex and it's the newer stuff that's made in China. Look for the old Pyrex at estate sales and yard sales - it's the best and won't explode!
Oh dear friend, I am sorry... but happy you were not hurt! Could have been so much worse! I cook with this a lot and will certainly remember your advice!
Love the book and all of the pretties! Christmas will be here before we know it! Have a blessed Monday! HUGS!
First off I am glad you were not HURT too bad!! My Pastors wife said that happened to her about a year ago. She made a birthday cake in one of the blue pyrex ones and she set it on the stove top and it exploded everywhere!
I'm glad you weren't seriously hurt, Dawn! I have corningware casserole dishes and usually only cook with them at about 350, so they haven't been a problem, but I am going to keep this in mind anyway. Most of the time I like to use the aluminum pans for easier clean up.
Oh, Dawn, that could have been disasterous! So glad you weren't hurt badly. God was watching over you, your baby girl and dil. Praise God.
I can understand why you loved these photos. They look like they've come right out of your home or workshop. Lovely.
Wow Dawn that is awful!! I have not heard of that with Pyrex dishes before ~ that is what I use all the time ~
I am glad that you are okay sweet friend!
xoxo

Oh Dawn- I am so glad none of the hot food or glass got on your skin or eyes!! Very scary! I forgot to prick the skin of some baked potatoes wonce, and when I grabbed one with the oven mitt it exploded- luckily non got on me. I will be careful with my pyrex!! I have a large piece of granite on the counter top- like a cutting board- that I often put hot dishes on, rather than the stove. You need to go look for some cool trivets!! HUGS from its-cold-here-already MAINE!
How terrible! I hope you'll be recovered soon! We use these Pyrex dishes here in Belgium as well! In fact, made a dish in the oven in it last week. Don't know if I'll be using it again???!!
Greetings from Belgium from a new blogfriend.....
Netka
I would have cried, as well. If only for the fear of it all but your hard work was ruined. Thank you for sharing this, I will never bake in Pyrex again.
I'm so glad you were not hurt. That is all that matters.
Dawn, that scared me all the way up here. I hope that you weren't hurt beyond a bad shake-up. That's exactly how I'd have handled it as well...a good scream and the tummy in knots for a bit. Thank you for the warning.
Sweet ideas from Victoria.
Well,I am so thankful you were not hurt seriously...we had something similar happen at a church gathering one time....there was something staying warm on the stove top in the fellowship hall kitchen in a pyrex and it did the same as yours. No one was near it at the time but, what a mess. The book is lovely and you are so right...its not to early to start thinking about Christmas. I am doing handmade gifts this year so I am already working on that. Blessings on your week dear friend.
Dawn, I'm glad you are alright, I just wanted to cry when I read your post. I know how frightening that can be. Also be carefull of boiling water in the microwave in a glass container. After you take the container out of the microwave, if you put a metal spoon in the glass, it can explode. I'm so sorry this happened to you. Give your boys extra kisses.
Wow the explosion.. so unexpected... Glad it wasn't more serious for you... I am thinking Christmas and how simple it will be this year... snow and snowflakes... Thats it...
Hello Dawn, What a gorgeous blog! I can't wait to mosey around a bit mote. And thank you for having Hug Snug on your sidebar... I LOVE IT and I now I know where to buy it thanks to you. ( -:

Dawn, thank God you weren't burned and your eyes are safe from broken glass!!
It could have been so much worse than it was...thank you Lord for watching over Dawn and her family! What a wonderful sons you have too!
Thank you Dawn - for sharing the sweet images from your Victoria Christmas book!
Dear Dawn~ If I was there I would have sat on the porch and cried with you. So glad you are okay. I think it's wise to share the information, too! Love and Fall Wishes~ Mandy
Dawn, a similar thing happened to me a few weeks ago. I baked asparagus in Pyrex casserole dish at 400 deg. I had been cooking rice on the stove top and some condensation was left on the stove from the lid. When I placed the hot Pyrex dish on the slightly wet stove top it broke into pieces. Thankfully, no glass got in my food because it was lined with heavy duty foil. God was protecting me because I had my head right next to it as I leaned into the oven to look at the chicken. Do you think there could have been condensation from your hot potatoes? We've had our Pyrex for over 30 years! I'm so glad you're OK and not badly hurt.
Just a note of clarification, if you have older Pyrex (let's say 10 yrs and older) you most probably will never have an exoploding one. Corning/Pyrex that is newer is NOT the same glass. My son who works for a glassmaking company warned me a few years ago after a conversation with someone who knew about the changes in their glassmaking method and the potential for breaking. ABC news ran a story about this problem too, but didn't make it clear that this was happening to only newer Pyrex. If you've got lots of the "old" stuff like I do, you're probably never going to have an exploding casserole. You had a guardian angel watching over you Dawn, you could have been severely injured.
I just heard this on the news last week about the new Pyrex and Anchor Hocking glass bakeware. It's so scary! Like Marda said, you are so lucky you weren't injured.
Thank goodness you weren't hurt badly--and that no one else was, either. This same thing happened to my sister in her kitchen a few months ago--a pyrex casserole dish blew up . . . we all need to be careful with Pyrex from now on--I never even thought this could happen to Pyrex!
I am so glad to hear that you were not hurt. And I would have cried, too, out of sheer fright!! As for the Pyrex, what I've read says that the older Pyrex made here in the USA is safe. It is the newer Pyrex pieces made overseas, where they skimp on ingredients in the glass and add things like lime, which is not safe and does not harden like real Pyrex, is the stuff that explodes. You didn't say which you were using, but your story reminded me of what I had read awhile ago.
