~ Da Vinci study for you ~~
I have been a night owl as long as I can remember.
When I was in high school
I would stay up until 2:00 in the morning
finishing my homework so I would make good grades ~
obsessive, yes...but I did graduate with all A's!
My brothers are quite similar, loving to stay up late,
so I think it's just the way we are!
So believe it or not, my favorite time to get started in the studio
is about 4:00 in the afternoon!!!
Yes, it's absolutely crazy, I know that.
But my creative time seems to always want to happen
from about 4:00 pm till about 1:00 am!
I want to create, take pics (not the best time to take great photos too)
and then post on my blog.
I guess to each his own though ~
it just seems to be the way I roll :)
I had a few old frames that I added a cardboard backing to,
then glued on a bit of burlap, antique ledger paper and copies
of a few wonderful old images ~ accented by vintage watch faces!
These are both for my sweet DIL Emily ~ just to have in her home,
she picked out the photos herself.
These are very simple pieces but have a wonderful look.
This is the scrap of a very old baby quilt that I've been using lately.
And I do mean scrap too!
I would never cut an old quilt up if it didn't have gaping holes in it :)
Just look at the teeny stitches a wonderful woman made for a sweet new baby.
My joy is to create new items from these tattered old pieces.
This is a little experiment inspired by my dear friend Lisa ~
Just a couple of pieces of waxed paper, sewn together and what's packaged inside?
Dried petals and leaves....to preserve their beauty.
I aged it all just a little with an almost dry ink sponge and brown ink.
Here's a little "in progress" photo....
Lace is everywhere ~ I always lay pieces on top to see how I feel about them.
Can you tell that I love tons of lace and cruddy old stuff?
And here's the end result.
A new needle keep

just listed in my Etsy ~
using the antique baby quilt, a beautiful fragment of an embroidered hanky,
vintage lace and of course aged seam binding and old buttons!!
And you won't even believe this....
I was able to complete another piece as well!!!
A beautiful collage from an antique card ~ from 1905!
I used the actual card here because I just felt it needed to be in this collage.
Teal seam binding loopy fringe...antique lace...vintage sheet music.
A simple, sweet combination ~ in my Etsy store as well.
It never ceases to amaze me how wonderful I feel when I make something.
Whether or not anyone else likes it....
it. feels. wonderful.
Have a beautiful Wednesday my sweet friends,
hugs and love,
Dawn

I love to work in the early hours of the day if possible. These little items are just gorgeous. I have just completed several vintage and lace needlebooks too which have been sent off to a shop.
It is lovely to complete an item reasonably quickly.
Hugs to you Dawn,
Suzy
Yes, I am a night owl too! After reading this post, I think surely you and I must be related!
Well....here I am at 5:00 AM unable to sleep. I've already cleaned the kitchen and folded laundry. But I usually create between about 10:00AM to 3:00PM. Then, my creative urge leaves me. Looks like that may not happen today though! :) Always a pleasure to visit your blog. I love your newest creations.
Hi Dawn,
I'm just the opposite, I come alive at 7:00 am in the morning and usually crash by nine at night!
I guess it doesn't matter when our creativity begins as long as it happens. I just love what you have created, everything is so perfect. I love the needle keep.
hugs
Sissie
Lovely creations! I like to do my work late at night, yes I've always been a night owl :)
oh i'm a night owl too! started in college and has never changed! kindred spirits are we! I adore your newest creations...the needle keep is so sweet and the wall-hanging is gorgeous! TFS!
Since I have to be at my office (day job) at 7:30am, (that's should be a sin) I'm up at 5:00am, ugh. On my days off, I wake up around 5 or 6 - it's just the ugly truth.
I can get those creative juice flowing anytime at all. There is no real pattern, I go with the flow. I've made some of my favorite pieces while trying to squeeze some creative time in my day.
Love your needle book and your collage!
I love lace and cruddy old stuff, and I work in the evenings and if I'm not careful, it's 2 a.m. before I know it... Are you my twin??
xoxo
Dearest Dawn, your night creations are so beautiful- and they are already gone from your Etsy...
I loved the both of them- and that you used that wonderful old quilt in the neadle-keeper.
Also Love Emily`s pictures, and the wonderful old time feeling, they have.Oh and the waxed papers, and all the laces, is just putting me in wonderland- my precius friend.
Wishing you a happy evening, dear.
Hugs and love-Dorthe
I'm an early morning person for sure and do my best work while still in my PJs!
Sweet friend, it wouldn't matter when you created, everything would be perfect. I think you could put out amazing art even in your sleep!!! What lovely treasures in this post.
I have to tell you how much I loved your simple things post. Isn't it great to be content? Your home in the country is a dream come true Dawn. I can tell how happy you are!
sending love...
gorgeous!
love the colours
love to creat in late afternoon!
take care,
Rosa
It's getting pretty close to bedtime for me so we're on opposite ends of the clock for creativity. Your keeps are just terrific and I love how you created that "fringe" of seam binding on the last piece.
Ooh, I love the fringe on that altered card piece! (and I love the needle keeps too I've been thinking about making something similar to carry my keys and phone in when I'm wearing a skirt and don't want to lug around an actual bag.)
It's interesting. My coming up with ideas time could be any time, but most often its as I'm falling asleep (where upon I stay awake for another hour mentally figuring out how to do it), my artistic creative time is in the afternoon, and my writing time is in the morning.
It's a wonder I get anything done.
I went to your etsy shop, there wasn't anything there. Darn. I like to create in the am. Actually I love to get up at 4am and work. It is quiet and peaceful.
Dawn, I love all your creations! the needle keeps and the old card with the seam binding fringe! So sweet!
Hearts,
Sherry
Oh, Dawn, it is so nice to see you creating again!
My favorite time of day to create...from about 10 a.m. on....
Hugs! Diane

Hi Dearest Dawn,
What a clever and busy bee you have been. I hope that you had as much enjoyment making these goodies as I have had looking at them. They are all soooo yummy. I especially love your darling little needle keep with it's shabby chic binding ruffle. You always have such great ideas and with your 'magic touch' you transform ordinary items into the most gorgeous treasures. Thank you soo much for sharing all your work with us.
Warmest best wishes
Suey
