Living on the tracks ~

After living in the farmhouse now for over seven months
it seems we've all gotten used to the sound of trains rolling past ~
The sounds have become quite endearing to me, but I'm a goober
and that's to be expected!

Spring has finally arrived here in Georgia. I think.
It rained evening before last and a blast of cold air rushed in!
The weather guy called it "Blackberry Winter"
Of course I had to Google it :)
This is what I found:

Oldtimers knew that blackberries need a cold snap to set buds on the blackberry canes,
so as sure as night follows day, there will be a cold snap when the blackberries bloom
called Blackberry Winter.
It comes with a somewhat less severe return of a continental polar air mass
after the maritime tropical air masses have begun to dominate the weather.

It's not going to last long, as a matter of fact,
by this weekend we should be in the eighties again!

Look at what my sweet husband brought me home last weekend ~
three gorgeous ferns for our front porch!
I'm going to put them in wonderful old wire hanging planters ~

Look at the tiny buds on one of the big hydrangea bushes out front!
I can't help myself, I have a love affair with their gorgeous blooms ~

This photo is another hydrangea that I brought from our last house ~
my mother's day gift last year!
Look at it's sweet little buds ~
(I'm sorry the pic is a bit blurry, it was a windy day!)

Remember the wonderful pecan trees in our yard?
Just look at them now!!!

A sweet discovery, wild roses growing on the back fence ~

Over the back fence ~

This pic is a little blurry but it's the side of our barn

My babies are getting so big!!
Yes, there are only four now.
A dog got into our back yard and killed two of our chickens a few weeks ago....
it was absolutely awful.
So I've really tightened up the security around their current pen.
We still haven't built their permanent pen
that will attach to the coop Brent made me....
hopefully we will be finishing it in the next few weeks.

We had a clothes line right behind our back fence.
It had an old wire hanging between two posts....
Our son Brent knew it was a dangerous thing to have so he clipped it.
Don't you love the look of it all wound around the post?

Our fence is so jacked up, but that's what I love about it ~
there's even an old baby bed wire spring woven into one side of it :)

This my sweet friends, is an old well house on the back of the house.
The door is nailed shut.
Inside is a very old and very deep well that used to provide the house with water.
Now it's just a dangerous hole ~ thank goodness it's closed off.

I just wanted to share a little look around the farmhouse ~

I hope you have a wonderful Thursday dear friends,
hugs and love,
Dawn

The Pecan tree is beautiful with the mossy look-will you have pecan`s from it ,you think ?
So awful with your sweet chickend dearest Dawn- you will feel much more content with the new more secured pen.
I wish you the most wonderful day in your beautiful home and surroundings, sweetie.

Dawn...Your beautiful property makes a Midwest girl green with envy...lol...or makes a test in patience to wait for true SpRiNg to arrive here!Your "old" fence must have plenty a story to tell and I love the creativity of an old baby spring for repair...something tells me your home has been a haven for a creative soul or two!
Sunny days to you and when you need some help in picking those blackberry...let us know!

Such a beautiful piece of property Dawn! Your wild roses are lovely...I wonder what other surprises you will find there this spring and summer?
I loved this glimpse of your farm.
Take care, Laura :)

Lovely pictures of your new home--it looks so peaceful and pretty! I also love train sounds--we have one near our house.
Your rose is a Mother's Day rose--probably received as a gift and planted for the Momma who raised her children there! They are very hearty and bloom at Mother's Day time every year around the old homesteads. If I ever get to buy an old farmhouse, the prerequisite for the sale will be that one of these are growing on the property somewhere!! Thanks for the tour!

Thank you for showing the pics of your farm. Brings back memories. My parents restored an old farm house. It had a barn, an outhouse and a chicken coop. Plus lots of farm land. I loved that house. The bedroom floors were somewhat tilted. It was wonderful sitting on the big porch. There was a well too, but it was covered.

So that's what a blackberry winter is all about. There's a short story by Robert Penn Warren by the same title. I've always wondered.

Your farm is wonderful. What a place for Clara to play. Even though the boys are nearly all grown up, I bet they love it there, too. It is just like you to love the added bits and pieces like the children's spring added to the fence. Yup, so you!

What fun pictures Dawn! It's still so very chilly here in IN, especially for this time of year for us. I'm waiting for the roses to bloom here - yours are beautiful!

Such a wide open space, Dawn! Your ferns will look great hanging on your porch. That is one of my favorite looks for a porch.

Dawn, dear,
Lovely pictures-what a beautiful yard and view you have there. All that grass and shade, and your beautiful roses. Happy Spring to you. Here in Massachusetts my daffodils have not yet bloomed, tho they are in the shade and my neighbor's are all gone by. I am extending spring...!
Hugs,
Sherry

I have loved the cooler weather. I need to finish up in the yard without it being too hot. It's always amusing to read that other folks are slow( to us) to hit spring - I am fixin' to cut back the finished blooms on my Knock Out Roses since they have already bloomed once. I like the fact that the cooler weather slows down the Summer effect and things last longer. My first daylily has bloomed -Stella- and I anxiously await what follows- as they are my favorites.

Dawn, you have a beautiful place! Don't you just love living in the country? So sorry about your chicken. Hopefully the rest will be o.k. I'm afraid of chickens so I could never raise them. My Grandma said a rooster got after me when I was little. I don't remember it, but to this day I'm still afraid of them.

Thanks for the tour. It's fun to see your surroundings.
We can hear the train and the train whistle - I love knowing it is so near.
Would not want to live any place where I could not hear a train whistle.
Hugs,
Gerry

Dawn, i had no idea you lived in the country and had all that beautiful scenery around you!! And that you live in an old house.........jealous!! Loved seeing the pictures of your home.........can I come over and pick some pecans this fall? (LOL!!)

It was so nice getting to see where you live. You are certainly a Georgia Peach! Your tree is beautiful, we have large tree's here on our farm and I love them too. I love pecans, I hope you have a great harvest. The sound of a train is for some reason special to me. I am sure it has something to do with living in the farm belt of California as a child. I would set and watch the cars go by wondering where they were going. On a real soft night we can hear the train in Old Town Nampa on it's way to places north. We have the old well here on our farm, but it was filled with rocks and then I made it into a planter. We still get our water from the new well, it is so good. you sound Happy Dear Dawn, this new home has been a adventure that will just keep giving. Hugs, mary
