Well, I guess I'll have to stop making things eventually because the shower is only a week away now!! But I do love making things and what better reason is there than for our first grandchild's baby shower ~
I started on the cupcake picks today and I'm really pleased with the way my prototype turned out! I received an email a few days ago from Lana, a sweet reader friend of the blog and she told me that she gathers her crepe paper on the sewing machine. I remember trying that a while back and it was successful but I forgot what a time saver it is.
She mentioned that she places her finger behind the pressure foot using a long stitch and that it bunches up and gathers as you sew. I couldn't seem to make it work that way but I did gather it up in front of the pressure foot then I would sew over the gathers. Am I doing this correctly? Maybe you have a better technique that I'd love to know about ~ please comment and let me know....thank you so much Lana for guiding me in the right direction!!
I've sandwiched the gathered crepe paper between posterboard and the image of the baby plus added a small bamboo skewer in the sandwich as well. I had to trim the crepe paper as I didn't want a super huge ruffle getting all in the frosting! I'll probably pop them in the cupcakes right before serving them at the shower.
I need to work on Emily's corsage :)
OH!! And my new toy that I used on the cupcake picks is a paper punch from Fiskars that I bought last week at Michael's (with a coupon too.) You can see where you are placing your tool to cut and then just squeeze together the handles! I love it ~ (I showed it to my DH and he said, "so, all it does is cut circles...." well....he just doesn't "get" it!)
Another little idea, I found this chipboard book at Michael's for 1.00! Well, I took it apart (and of course saved the rings) but sprayed one side with spray glue, pressed tacky side down on the back of pretty paper then trimmed out with the exact-o knife. I'm hoping to use these as candle mats ~
Well, I'm sure after this week is over you will be so very tired of baby everything but please endulge me for a little longer!! After the shower I'm having my blogiversary giveaway and I'm going to be making something plus I have extra gifts from a special friend of mine so there will be more than one winner!
Wishing you a restful, peaceful Sunday sweet friends ~

You are so very creative, I love your stuff. And that punch is pretty cool, don't you just love Michael's?
How cute! I can't wait until I have a grandbaby to make pretty things for! I've visited your blog before and the first thing I noticed was your beautiful background. How do you do that?
Anything about grandkids is not boring! Enjoy this time. I must have one of those circle punches...but shh! don't tell anyone here I'm buying more craft stuff. Enjoy the weekend.

Never boring my friend....you are my teacher - now I have to go try and use my machine to ruffle crepe paper - I already purchased the crop-a-dile (love it) and I want to make cupcake picks for Valentine's Day...Michael's here I come!! XO Judy
I'm enjoying all of your baby shower creations! I can't believe you got the flower shaped book for $1! I had to giggle at your husbands comment about the circle punch...LOL. ~Lori
Dawn, that is going to be the sweetest, most adorable baby shower EVER!!! you should be so proud of yourself...that baby is getting a truly wonderful grandma...i hand stitch and gather my crepe paper for rosettes and ruffles...works for me and for some reason, i have this strange aversion to dragging out my sewing machine...
Dawn ~
Ohhh it looks like you are just having the best time with the shower ~ you are making such precious things ~ Please post pictures when you get it all decorated ~
xoxo,
Lori
Dawn, this is going to be just the prettiest baby shower anywhere!
I hope you are saving all of these photos to submit to Somerset!
Thank you for showing us the squeezie thing for making circles. I was wondering about those. I bought a 1" Martha circle cutter that is more of the punch type with a handle but I also looked at the type you are showing. Maybe I'll try one of those in a larger size next time.
Also would like an oval! One that's at least 3" long. Wonder if there is such a tool?
So...I hope we'll all be seeing these lovelies in a magazine someday! The little crepe paper rufflies with the baby image - oh-so-sweet, friend!

Dawn I think the cupcake pics are adorable. Everyone will certainly love them. Great idea for the candle mat. Congrats on your first grandchild.
Dawn, I love the cupcake picks!! I'm going to be sewing some crepe paper on my machine soon for some up coming projects. I'll let you know how it turns out. It all looks so charming and is coming together wonderfully!
It's about time they made a punch that allows you to see where you're punching! I always have to turn my punches upside down when I need to punch something precisely.
Keep having fun! ::Jill
Dawn, I hate to tell you this... But you will be making stuff until the day before the shower. LOL At least that was what I was doing. Could not stop!!! Just to let you know.... There is a wonderful 3" Scalloped Punch out by EK Success that will punch chipboard. The scallops are smaller than what you are showing but it is beautiful. I just punch out my chipboard and 2 scrapbook pages ~ spray adhesive them together ~ perfect scalloped "something" LOL
You shower is going to be so wonderful!!!
Love you,
Yvette
This is an exciting time for you, Who could blame you. What fun to see all that sweetness your creating for your first grandbaby. congradulations!!
Good Sunday to ya,

Wow you are going all out! I could only dream about having a mother in law like you. The shower you are preparing is going to be unbelievable! Baby Clara is going to be one lucky little girl.

High hopes to you!
Good job on the cupcake thingys. I usually just pull the bobbin thread after it's sewn to gather fabric---never tried crepe paper but I was just thinking about gathering crepe paper today in church--wierd.. (yes, I'd already heard the same sermon two hours before in the first service and besides, I do my best craft planning in church. The pastor thinks I'm taking notes:]) You never bore me--baby on!!!
I can't even mend, so I can't help you w/ the sewing thing, but I think what you've done looks great! Can't wait to see photos from the shower!
I hope you will take lots of photos for us all to see. You have created so many tresures that we could never be bored. I am just amazed at all things you have done! A mini baby shower tutorial all in it's own. Hugs!
There's no reason to be bored here...love all the tricks you're learning and the way that you think beyond a product's original intent.
Well these are the sweetest decorations ever. I'm so impressed with the cupcake picks...and those canle mats; I would never have thought of that.
Go ahead Grammy, indulge away. They grow up fast as you can tell by the little one sitting on my pink bench. She just turned 6 in September and I swear she was three years old last year!
I never tire of your projects no matter what they are! You are always an inspiration! This is going to be the sweetest baby shower!
You have every reason to be excited about the baby shower and post about it, after all this is your first grandchild! I hope to see pictures of the shower posted on your blog, it will be beautiful.
Oh Dawn,
I'm sure that is going to be the most beautiful baby shower ever! How could it not be?
Please make sure to take lots of pictures for us....
Cheers,
Gail
You are so creative and talented. Everything is beautiful.
Peggy
Baby showers are my very favorite kind of party! I never get tired of looking at pretty baby things. I look at your blog every day, eager to see what else you have made for the shower!
God bless,

dawn,
can't wait to see photos of shower...take hundreds!!!

Think this is the first time I've left a comment but have been reading all along. Crepe paper gathers for the cup cakes. Instead of trimming the crepe paper had you thought about gathering it down the middle then folding in half along the stitch line. The ruffle might be to big for the cupcake picks but I think it would look great under the candle with the chipboard candle matts. Just a thought.
Now way...I will never get tired of hearing and seeing all your wo derful touches for the shower. Little Clara is one lucky lady. I was at Michaels and bought the same chipboard for $1.00 only in the heart shapes. What a deal! Can't wait to see more. Get some rest. Blessings...Sherry
Dawn your decorations arenothing short of sweet and spectacular! You could be a babyshower planner-you know like a wedding planner!
~Smiles~Tam!
I love your little shower creations Dawn! Hope you take lots of photos!
I would love to know that trick for sewing the crepe paper too...I had never thought of that! I usually just get burnt fingers trying to do it with my glue gun...lol!
And I so want one of those circle cutters!!! Must go find one asap!
Dawn, Great job on all of the wonderful goodies for the shower. Hope you will be sharing your photos of the event!
Hope you are having a great week.
Hugs, Sharon
