Don't you just love it when an idea works?!

Here's an adorable image for you....isn't he/she precious??

So, I'm still working on my peat pots...
good grief, it's taking me forever to get going on these!!

Anyway, I bought a big ol' bag of Spanish moss from
Hob Lob and was planning on using it to fashion the nests
for the peat pots. But the color was just too gray for me.
I wanted brown and sepia tones ~
Then I thought, why not try coffee like I use on tags and paper!

So I grabbed a small bunch, dipped it in the coffee
then squeezed out the excess ~ the results were great!!
I even started molding the nest into shape while the moss was still damp.
The color was great, the shape was good too ~ but the
coffee scent was just too much for me.
I want you to notice the artwork, not so much the smell!

Here's a photo of the coffee moss after it dried.

Then I remembered I had a bottle of brown Rit dye!
I mixed up a couple of quarts of very hot water and
about a fourth of a cup of the dye.
I dipped the moss in,
wrung it out and placed in on several layers
of paper towels to dry.
(Oh, I did wear gloves too!)
I just LOVE the color!!!
It's so neat, you can really dye most anything you want to!!!

I've been playing with a few other things too~
It's always good for me to do that before I bring out the glue!

I found a few goodies to share with you too!!

Wishing you a great Tuesday dear friends ~
hugs and love,
Dawn

Hello, pretty lady! You always have such wonderful and inspirational ideas. I so appreciate that you share them with us! I'm off to check out the ruffly top tutorial. I'm not sure that extra "fluff" on MY bodice is a good thing, but it sure is girly, and I have to see more. Have a great day, Dawn. See you again soon.

Hi, sweet Dawn - It's nice to hear from you and to be back to visiting again.

What a great idea! I have some spanish moss, too, but don't like the gray color. I'm going to try the RIT dye on it.

What a fab idea!

Hoping you are all well and happy. Hoping little Clara is well and that your son is doing great (he is the age of my youngest).

God bless,
Elizabeth

Oh Dawn i love the brown moss. I too detest that grey color of the spanish moss (that's why I never buy it). Aren't you the clever girl to dye it. THANK YOU for thinking outside of the box for me. Lately, I'm doing good to think in or out of a box.... :( Now I'm off to check out the T Shirt. Have a wonderful week. HUGS! Charlene

I think Columbian birds would welcome the coffee aroma of your stained moss. However the dyed look of the Rit moss is clearly perfect. Such a clever woman you are. Happy creating...

Dawn,
I love the rit dye idea! I'm gonna have the kids out pulling weeds and plungin' em all in a vat of dye! LOL I always hesitate to use that spanish moss because of the gross color, but think of the possiblities now that you know you can dye it! I wonder what would happen if you threw bleach on it too, before?? Ann's got me wanting to bleach out everything now. LOL I'm telling you girl, your gonna have the peat pot deal down to a science by Barn House. Oh Lordy, I'm pulling a Rose, better go. Lisa

Dawn,
Such a great idea staining the Spanish moss.
I never liked the gray either and that is how i started gathering 'weeds' and grasses for my nests.

Speaking of great ideas!!
The idea to put my teabag rose bouquets in a baby shoe is just toooo sweet!!
Guess you know I'll be sing that one.
We make a great team!!

blessings and thanks,

Dawn, I love the dyed moss! I forget that I used to dye basket reeds all the time. Maybe a bit of a mixed color/mixed media nest would be fun. I used to visit a nest in a lilac bush that had a string cheese wrapper and a red ribbon in it. Have fun!
