Mini paper aging tutorial ~

I've been working on my nature/bird tags for the trees that I have in the store. The tags were aged with instant coffee and already had a beautiful patina but the papers with images that I wanted to add to them were really white and newish looking.

Well, I love this Distress Ink and have discovered a wonderful shade of brown, "brushed corduroy." I love the "vintage photo" shade of ink too but this brown has less rust tones.

I cut a small circle of warm and natural or cotton batting, you know the bumpy kind, and dabbed it into the center of the ink pad.

Next, I placed my small art onto a scrap piece of paper and very carefully started dabbing the edges all around to give the a brownish feel. You may have to go back and dampen the batting a couple of times. Just do it with a soft touch that way you can control the darkness. I actually did this all over the art as I ran out of ink to give the paper a more aged appearance. Then I used my glue stick to add snippets of old sheet music and then lastly the aged image.

You may like your tags to look new but if you old, aged, speckled and vintage . . . this technique is for you!

Wow! This is so neat but I am sure I cannot get most of the items here in Holland. I found the brown paper tags once when I needed an idea for name tags for my quilt show I organized and was thrilled to have found them. I think these tags are a gift in themselves!

I love Tim Holtz products, want to find his one step crackle paint -- guess will have to buy it online , will save time -- love to ink the edges of things also . He has two dvd tutorials -- very good -- As for your giveaway , well i love the tray and birds are a constant theme i love -- as for keys -- have been slowly collecting old keys -- hard to find - and little silver trays are too sweet - Kathy

Great tip! I have just tried the coffee or tea stain method. I'll have to show your post to my husband. He wants to age a poster.

i love distressing tags and papers, i love the products you use, i use them also. i have also tried the small inks in oval type shapes, cat eyes they call them, and just pick up the pad and it is small enuf to git into corners and deep edges. i sometimes bake or microwave the tags for a deeper look, more aged/prim. if it is warm, sunnie dayz i put on the deck to bake, too. if i use the oven my husband thinks he is getting a baked goodie, and is disappointed when "it is just tags baking" poor guy. so abused. on my Christmas cards i made this year i tried a product from inkssentials, ranger product, called sepia accents. kinda glue type, but gives off a brownish tone on top of the area applied to. it dries raised (3-d sorta)transparent and a neat accent. it gives dimension to flourishes and any inked or art. blessings, vikki =)

Thanks for another tip. I have several Ranger Distress Ink pads and enjoy using them - good buy when one has the "Archivers" discount coupons!!

Dawn do you buy new sheet music or copy old? I have old which of course I hesitate to use because it will be gone - so am now copying it!
